Tips on How to Repair a Belt-Drive Garage Door Opener
Your garage door opener is a key part of your home. From keeping intruders out to bringing your groceries in, this device helps to keep you safe and comfortable. When it’s time for a tune-up, take these garage door opener repair tips for your belt-drive garage door opener:
Shift the drive belt to the next section of the track.
To do this, you can either shift it by hand or use a screwdriver. Make sure that you don’t damage either the belt or the track while doing so. This method only works if your garage door opener has a loose drive belt and will not work if your entire system is broken or malfunctioning.
Adjust the drive belt tension.
To adjust the drive belt tension, you’ll need to loosen both sides of the adjustment screw. Then you can tighten or loosen them accordingly. For example, if your garage door opener is not too noisy but seems like it takes too long for it to open or close, then you may want to increase the tension on one side of the drive belt by turning that side’s adjustment screw clockwise. If your garage door opener is very noisy and hard to use, then try decreasing its tension by turning both sides’ adjustment screws counterclockwise.
Check and clean the motor pulley wheels.
Check for dirt and debris on the pulleys. If you see any, use a cotton cloth to gently wipe them off. Be careful not to damage the rubber seal around each pulley wheel with your cleaning tool. Use your vacuum cleaner’s brush attachment or an air compressor to blow out any dust from inside of each sheave. This will prevent them from binding together as they rotate, which could cause damage in the long run if left unchecked!
